The Gruffalo is Monstrous Fun for All Ages

When a child sees a storybook character leap to life on stage, their imagination runs wild.  The deep, dark wood grows before your eyes on the Gallagher Bluedorn stage this April in Julia Donaldson’s “The Gruffalo”. Join Mouse on a daring adventure in Tall Stories’ magical, musical adaptation.

The Tale of A “Heroic” Mouse

A small mouse encounters many foes on his journey through the woods: a fox, an owl, and a snake, to name a few. He must find a solution quickly if he wants to survive, which he finds by telling the story of the frightening Gruffalo in an effort to scare the predators away.

However, Mouse’s tall tale turns out to be true when he meets the fabled Gruffalo in person! The mouse must come up with a strategy to convince the Gruffalo that Mouse is indeed the scariest creature in the deep, dark wood.

A Worldwide Success

"The Gruffalo" was originally written in 1999. Since its inception, there have been films, more books to the series, and plenty of other fun involving the character. The book includes rhythm and rhyme, providing repetitions that encourage children to play along! The story was inspired by a Chinese folk tale called “The Fox that Borrows the Terror of a Tiger”.

"The Gruffalo" was voted The Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book of the Year Awards in 2005, and has also won the Nestlé Smarties Prize and the Blue Peter Award for The Best Book to Read Aloud. There are Gruffalo fans everywhere: the story has been translated into over 100 languages, including Thai, Russian, Scots and Maori . . . and for Classics scholars, there is even a Latin edition.

The Gruffalo Meets The Theatre

A recent development in The Gruffalo franchise, the theatrical adaptation, comes to Gallagher Bluedorn to tell the story in a new, exciting way. Not only are familiar characters fun and engaging when brought to life, but the show includes songs that will be stuck in your head for the next several weeks!

The staged show follows the story from the book, but adds in extra dialogue and songs to keep it fresh and entertaining. The actors even involve the audience in certain scenes to make the experience more immersive. Tall Stories' production gives this continued family favorite so much more than what’s come before it.
